SBL 2009 (2): Pauline Soteriology

My second official SBL presentation this November (see previous post for the first) will be a review of Douglas Campbell’s forthcoming book, The Deliverance of God:

Pauline Soteriology
11/23/2009
1:00 PM to 3:30 PM
Room: Room TBD – Hotel TBD
Theme: Book Review Session: The Deliverance of God
Douglas Campbell, The Deliverance of God: An Apocalyptic Rereading of Justification in Paul (Eerdmans, 2009).
Ann Jervis, Wycliffe College, Presiding

Michael J. Gorman, Saint Mary’s Seminary and University, Panelist (20 min)
Alan Torrance, University of St. Andrews-Scotland, Panelist (20 min)
Douglas Moo, Wheaton College, Panelist (20 min)
Douglas Campbell, Duke University, Respondent (20 min)

Break (10 min)
Discussion (60 min)

This session should also be quite interesting, as Alan Torrance is a friend and theological inspiration for Douglas Campbell, Douglas Moo will be (I suspect) quite at odds with most of the book, and I am… well, let’s just say that I blurbed the book but I have some disagreements with certain parts.

  1. Thanks for this, Mike! This is one session I won’t be missing.

  2. MJG says:

You’re welcome, Michael. I’m sure there will be some fireworks, at least from the audience.

  3. Halden says:

That will be interesting. Personally I think Moo is one of the shabbiest Paul scholars out there, especially on Romans. Frankly I’m surprised to even see him on the panel.

Who I’d like to see on the panel would be Francis Watson.

  4. MJG says:

    Halden,

The audience input (for those who have time to read the book!) could be just as fruitful as the panel. I don’t know Doug Moo very well, but I have been on a panel with him before, and he did a good job.

  5. Sean says:

Hey Mike, will you be posting your review of Doug’s book? My copy just arrived, and all I can say is WOW – I am quite intimidated. Do you know of any other reviews? I can imagine students like me will need some help just orienting themselves around the issues and discussion, never mind offering a response!

  6. MJG says:

    Sean,

In the Washington Post there is (or at least was) an occasional column called “Idol: We Watch so You Don’t Have To.” A LOT of people are going to be wanting synopses and reviews of this new book, but the book is too new (last week or so) for anything of substance yet, unless someone had the ms. in advance.

I have decided not to post anything but the most general comments before SBL so as not to spoil the fun there! But I will post something in the next month, and more after SBL.

The book is a challenging read, no doubt. I suggest taking advantage of his summaries and overviews.

  7. Sean says:

Thanks so much, really appreciate that. Look forward to getting into Doug’s book this week.

  8. Andy Rowell says:

I have posted the audio from yesterday’s session:
